Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)
Overview
A mandatory screening test for Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) who have completed their primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) from a foreign medical institution recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), enabling them to register and practice medicine in India.
Focus
Assessing the candidate’s medical knowledge and clinical skills to ensure they meet the standards required for medical practice in India, covering subjects like medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, and community medicine.
Educational Qualification
- A primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) awarded by a foreign institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools or recognized by the NMC, with completion of the required internship (if applicable).
Admission Process
- Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) with at least 50% marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC, as per NMC norms) and qualify for the entrance exam (if required) for a foreign medical institution.
- Pursue a primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized foreign medical institution (duration varies, typically 4–6 years, including internship in some countries).
- Obtain the Eligibility Certificate from the NMC (mandatory for Indian citizens before joining the foreign medical course, as per NMC regulations).
- Qualify for FMGE (conducted twice yearly, in June and December) by scoring at least 150 out of 300 marks in the computer-based test, and register with the NMC or State Medical Council to practice in India.
