Medical Registration Examination (MRE)
Overview
A mandatory licensing examination conducted by the Medical Council of Mauritius (MCM) for medical graduates (Mauritian citizens or non-citizens with a work permit or exemption) who hold a diploma in medicine from a recognized institution but lack at least 3 years of experience as a general practitioner, enabling registration to practice medicine in Mauritius.
Focus
Assessing the candidate’s medical knowledge and clinical skills across basic medical sciences and clinical disciplines (e.g., Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology) to ensure they meet the standards for practicing as a general practitioner in Mauritius. The exam is set by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), India, and conducted in English.
Educational Qualification
- A diploma in medicine (e.g., MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized medical institution listed under the Medical Council Act.
- Completion of at least 18 months of pre-registration training (internship) in a teaching hospital, either in Mauritius or abroad. For those with 12 months of training abroad, an additional 6 months in Mauritius is required.
Admission Process
- Complete Higher School Certificate (HSC) or GCE A-levels at one sitting with a minimum of 3 subjects and 21 points (based on the MCM-approved scale) and meet the entry requirements for a medical program.
- Pursue a medical degree (e.g., MBBS, typically 5 years, including internship in some countries) from a recognized medical institution (e.g., SSR Medical College or Anna Medical College in Mauritius, or other listed institutions).
- Complete 18 months of pre-registration training (internship) in a teaching hospital, either in Mauritius (for local graduates) or abroad (with an additional 6 months in Mauritius if only 12 months completed abroad).
- If lacking 3 years of post-qualification experience as a general practitioner, qualify for the MRE (conducted twice yearly, e.g., July 10, 2025, and December 10, 2025) by scoring at least 75 out of 150 marks in the computer-based test. Register with the MCM as a general practitioner upon passing.
Dental Registration Examination (DRE)
Overview
A mandatory licensing examination conducted by the Dental Council of Mauritius (DCM) for dental graduates (Mauritian citizens or non-citizens with a work permit or exemption) who hold a diploma in dental surgery (e.g., BDS or equivalent) from a recognized institution, enabling registration to practice dentistry in Mauritius.
Focus
Assessing the candidate’s dental knowledge and clinical skills across basic dental sciences and clinical dentistry (e.g., restorative dentistry, oral surgery, prosthodontics) to ensure they meet the standards for practicing as a dental surgeon in Mauritius. The exam includes a written component and, for postgraduate qualifications, a viva-voce examination, conducted in English.
Educational Qualification
- A diploma in dental surgery (e.g., BDS or equivalent) or a postgraduate dental qualification (e.g., MDS or equivalent) from a recognized dental institution listed in the Dental Council Act.
- For non-citizens, a valid work permit or exemption under the Non-Citizens (Employment Restriction) Act is required.
Admission Process
- Complete Higher School Certificate (HSC) or GCE A-levels with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) and meet the entry requirements for a dental program (specific grade requirements may vary by institution).
- Pursue a primary dental qualification (e.g., BDS, typically 4–5 years, including internship in some countries) or a postgraduate dental qualification (e.g., MDS, 2–3 years post-BDS) from a recognized dental institution.
- For Indian students, ensure the institution is recognized by the DCI and obtain an Eligibility Certificate if intending to practice in India later.
- Qualify for the DRE (conducted periodically, e.g., September 2023 for BDS, with the next likely in 2025) by scoring at least 50% in the written exam (150 MCQs) and, for postgraduate qualifications, 50% in the viva-voce examination. Register with the DCM as a dental surgeon upon passing.
