What is NCC?

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a voluntary youth organization in India that aims to develop discipline, leadership, and patriotism among students. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, it provides basic military training and fosters a sense of national unity through activities in schools and colleges across the country.

NCC Eligibility Criteria

To enroll in NCC, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Nationality:
  • Indian citizens.
• Age Limit:
  • Junior Division (JD/JW): 13–18.5 years (Class 8 to 10).
  • Senior Division (SD/SW): Up to 26 years (college students).
• Educational Qualification:
  • Junior Division:
    • Requirement: Enrolled in Class 8 or above in a recognized school.
    • What it is: Introduces school students to basic military training and discipline.
    • Activities Involved:
      • Drill practice, weapon handling basics, and map reading.
      • Participation in local camps and community service.
      • Adventure activities like trekking and rock climbing.
  • Senior Division:
    • Requirement: Enrolled in a recognized college or university.
    • What it is: Provides advanced training for college students, focusing on leadership and specialized skills.
    • Activities Involved:
      • Advanced drill, weapon training, and field exercises.
      • National-level camps like Republic Day Camp (RDC) and Thal Sainik Camp (TSC).
      • Specialized training in aviation or naval skills (for Air/Navy wings).
• Physical Standards:
  • Good physical and mental health, capable of participating in training activities.
  • No specific height or vision requirements, but fitness for camps is essential.
• Other:
  • Must be enrolled in a school/college with an NCC unit or nearby associate unit.
  • Parental consent required for minors (Junior Division).

Note: Both male and female students are eligible for Junior (JW) and Senior (SW) Wings.

NCC Enrollment & Training

NCC enrollment and training involve a structured process to develop cadets:

Step 1: Enrollment

• Process: Apply through school/college NCC units during the academic year.
• Selection: Based on physical fitness, interest, and unit vacancies.
• Duration: 2 years (Junior Division), 2–3 years (Senior Division).

Step 2: Training

• Regular Training:
  • Weekly parades for drill, physical fitness, and theory classes.
  • Topics: Military history, leadership, first aid, and disaster management.
• Camps:
  • Annual Training Camp (ATC): 10–12 days, basic military and adventure training.
  • National Integration Camp (NIC): Promotes unity and cultural exchange.
  • Republic Day Camp (RDC): Elite camp in Delhi for top cadets.
  • Specialized Camps: Thal Sainik, Vayu Sainik, Nau Sainik for advanced skills.
• Duration: Minimum 40 parades/year and at least one camp for certificate eligibility.

Step 3: Certification

• Exams: Written and practical tests for ‘A’, ‘B’, or ‘C’ certificates.
• Evaluation: Based on attendance, camp participation, and performance.

Note: Over 13 lakh cadets are enrolled across 17 NCC Directorates in India.

Certificates Offered by NCC

NCC offers certificates that enhance career prospects and personal growth:

• Certificate ‘A’ (Junior Division):
  • Eligibility: 2 years in JD/JW, attend one ATC.
  • Benefits: Weightage in school assessments and entry to Senior Division.
  • Duration: 2 years.
• Certificate ‘B’ (Senior Division):
  • Eligibility: 2 years in SD/SW, attend one ATC, 75% parade attendance.
  • Benefits: Weightage in defence exams (e.g., CDS, NDA) and government jobs.
  • Duration: 2 years.
• Certificate ‘C’ (Senior Division):
  • Eligibility: Hold ‘B’ certificate, 3rd year in SD/SW, attend one advanced camp.
  • Benefits: Up to 10–15% reservation in defence jobs, direct SSB interviews for some roles.
  • Duration: 3 years.
